Utterfinch
Privacy policy
LAST UPDATED: 17 OCTOBER 2026
Utterfinch turns your voice into text on your Mac. This page says what we collect, why, who helps us run it, and what you can do about it. We try to collect as little as possible.
Who we are
Utterfinch is made by Oncilla AI. For any question about privacy, or to ask us to access, export or delete your data, write to hello@utterfinch.com.
The free version
- Your voice is recognised on your Mac. The audio is not sent to us or anyone else.
- No account is needed. We receive nothing about you when you use it, apart from the download itself.
- Your vocabulary, snippets, settings and history are saved on your Mac. You can turn history off or delete it in the app.
An account (Pro and the free trial)
You sign in with an email link or with Google. We keep:
- your email address, and your name if Google provides one;
- your plan, trial dates and (when billing starts) your subscription status;
- how much you used each day (the number of words and of Clean/Formal rewrites), to apply the fair-use limits and show you your use.
You can download this data or delete your account from the Account screen in the app. Deleting removes your account and the usage we hold.
When you dictate with Pro
- Audio. Your voice is streamed to our server, recognised, and discarded. We do not store it.
- Text. The recognised text is returned to your Mac. We do not store it. If you use the Clean or Formal style, the text (not the audio) is sent through our server to a hosted language model, Google’s Gemini API, to be rewritten, and is not stored by us. We use Gemini’s paid service: under Google’s terms for it, Google does not use this text to improve its products or train its models, and it may keep logs for a limited time to detect abuse.
- Technical logs. Our server keeps operational logs (times, error types, sizes, your account’s identifier). They do not contain your audio or text.
Sharing a clip (optional, off by default)
In Settings you can turn on “Help improve Persian speech”. Your Mac then keeps each recording for 7 days, and for any dictation you can choose to share, you see exactly what will be sent: the recording and the text you confirm you said. Nothing is sent unless you press Send. A shared clip is anonymous (no name, email, app or account is attached), is used to train and test our speech models, and is not published or sold. You get a code, and you can ask us to delete the clip with it, in the app or by writing to us. Turning the setting off, or deleting a dictation, deletes the recording on your Mac.
Sign-in emails and payments
Sign-in emails are sent through Resend. When subscriptions start, payments are handled by Stripe; we never see your card number. We will keep the records of your subscription and invoices that tax and accounting law require, and update this policy when paid plans open.
Who processes data for us
- Supabase (database and sign-in), United States.
- Google Cloud (our speech server) and Google Gemini (rewriting text for Clean and Formal), United States.
- Cloudflare (this website, the model downloads, the storage for clips you share, DNS).
- Resend (sign-in emails). Stripe (payments, once available).
Your data may therefore be processed in the United States.
This website
We don’t use analytics or advertising trackers. If you join the early-access list we keep your email address and the language of the page, only to write to you about Utterfinch. Ask us to remove it any time.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your data, and to object to or restrict how it is used. Most of this you can do in the app (download my data, delete my account); for anything else write to hello@utterfinch.com. We keep data only as long as it is needed for the purposes above or the law requires.
Children
Utterfinch is not meant for children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Security
Connections are encrypted (HTTPS). Sign-in tokens are kept in your Mac’s Keychain. Access to our systems is limited and secrets are kept in a secret manager.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters we will say so in the app or by email before it takes effect.
